I only learned the meaning of the term less than ten years ago, and I learned it the hard way. To me, spirituality was something reserved for Catholic Argentines, the religious of the world, and my grandfather. My grandfather was a meditator.A few years ago, exhausted from stress, anxiety, and physical fatigue, a friend suggested we take a meditation course. I agreed immediately—after all, my grandfather, the least anxious person I knew, had always seemed unshakable to me. One plus one is two.But my friend never showed up. She got the wrong address, missed the first class, and gave up right then and there. Not me. I’m structured. When I start something, I have to finish it—otherwise, I imagine it ruins the aesthetics of my life, like a half-eaten slice of pizza left on the coffee table.And so, I completed a six-week Vipassana meditation course—six classes, each three hours long—a journey that turned out to be a one-way ticket to the unknown. Meditation schools should put warning signs at the entrance: "Embarking on the path of spirituality is no joke. Think twice." I’m convinced the Buddha statue at the door was smiling because he knew we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.Meditation isn’t just sitting in silence and chanting "ohm". Meditation is an invitation into the unknown. It’s stepping onto a path of self-transformation. It’s learning to do magic. And whoever learns to meditate becomes a magician.When I realized I was becoming spiritual, I felt uneasy. I didn’t like it. I didn’t recognize myself. I had always assumed spirituality and religion were one and the same. I was completely lost. I had spent my entire life resisting religion because I believed in science. I was a scientist, I am a scientist, I was sceptical.But spirituality, just as serene and disciplined as my meditation practice, continued to weave its way into my life. It didn’t ask for permission. And when I did, my ego—newly initiated in its process of deconstruction—relaxed: spirituality and religion are not the same thing.I had always thought spirituality was just an aspect of religion. The Leadership Shift: from Ego to Consciousness

—"Yo no soy religiosa", respondí.La vida me sonrió un poco con falsa ternura y otro poco con desvergonzada soberbia, y me abrió la puerta para ir a jugar.Si nunca escuchaste hablar de un despertar espiritual, no te preocupes, yo tampoco sabía lo que era. Aprendí el significado de este término hace menos de 10 años, y lo hice a la fuerza. Para mí, la espiritualidad era algo reservado para los argentinos católicos, los religiosos del mundo, y mi abuelo. Mi abuelo era meditador.Hace casi 10 años, cansada de mi estrés, mi ansiedad y mi agotamiento físico, una amiga me sugirió que hiciéramos un curso de meditación. Acepté de inmediato porque mi abuelo, que no tenía un pelo de ansioso, siempre me había parecido imperturbable. Uno más uno es dos. Sin embargo, mi amiga nunca llegó: se confundió de instituto y se perdió la primera clase. Después directamente desistió. Pero yo no. Soy estructurada, y cuando empiezo algo, tengo que terminarlo porque, si no, me imagino que arruina la estética de mi vida, como una porción de pizza a medio comer abandonada en la mesa del living.Así fue como completé un curso de "Meditación Vipassana" de 6 semanas, con lentas clases de 2.5 horas, que resultaron ser un viaje de ida. Las escuelas de meditación deberían poner carteles de advertencia en la entrada: "Embarcarse en el camino de la espiritualidad no es broma". Creo que el Buda en la recepción del instituto sonríe porque sabe que no sabemos. Sabe que no tenemos ni idea.Meditar no es sentarse y decir "ohm". Meditar es abrir una puerta hacia lo desconocido, es adentrarse en el camino de la autotransformación. Meditar es aprender a hacer magia, y quien aprende a meditar se convierte en mago.Cuando me di cuenta de que me estaba volviendo espiritual, me incomodé. No me gustó. No me reconocía. Siempre había creído que espiritualidad y religión eran casi lo mismo, y no entendía nada. Me había pasado toda la vida resistiéndome a cualquier religión porque creía en la ciencia, era escéptica, y las historias de la Biblia no me terminaban de convencer -probablemente porque no las entendia.Sin embargo, la espiritualidad, serena y disciplinada como mi práctica de meditación, siguió abriéndose camino dentro de mí. No pidió permiso ni asumió culpas.Tardé un poco en entenderlo, pero finalmente lo vi, y cuando lo vi, mi ego recién iniciado en su proceso de deconstrucción, se relajo: la espiritualidad y la religión no son lo mismo. Siempre pensé que la espiritualidad era un aspecto de la religión, pero si bien la religión puede, en ciertos casos, abrir un camino hacia a la espiritualidad, esta última es inmensamente más grande que cualquier sistema de creencias que, como humanidad, hayamos sido capaces de crear.La espiritualidad no necesita dogmas, intermediarios o escritos formales. Es un viaje hacia uno mismo, hacia algo que siempre ha estado ahí, paciente, esperando ser descubierto. Es la relación que se entabla con una presencia que surge cuando el cuerpo y la mente se hacen a un lado, y que lo es todo y nada al mismo tiempo. Es uno mismo, pero en estado intangible. Es la esencia que queda cuando nos despojamos de absolutamente todo. A Robbie Williams todavía le quedaban varias capas por remover en "Rock DJ". Y me atrevo a decir algo más: si lo hubiese hecho, habría llegado a esa esencia y habria conquistado a la chica, porque a ese nivel de esencia no hay distinciones entre el uno y el otro, el aquí o el allá, el ahora o el después. Solo existe el todo, en un estado de fusión absoluto.Cuando yo toqué ese todo, lo entendí. Fui todos, fui yo, fui aquello que podria definirse como dios, y todo sucedió al mismo tiempo.—"No sé qué me está pasando", dije.—"Estás teniendo un despertar espiritual", me dijeron.Y la puerta quedó abierta para seguir saliendo a jugar.
